Earlier this year, we partnered with the Best Buy Teen Tech Center in North Minneapolis, a technology-driven safe space for youth ages 13-18 to take classes, internships, workshops, and more.

We worked together on their architecture class, sharing the history of Old 6th Avenue with the students and talking about how transportation infrastructure affects our safety and where we live, work, and play. As the students engaged with the history of their neighborhood, many were surprised by the amount of displacement that occurred and that Sumner Library was physically moved to make way for Olson Memorial Highway.

From there, students worked with RSP architects to design street features they would like to see in their neighborhood, including bus shelters, artwork crosswalks, and pollinator gardens. Students learned the principles of 3D design and how they could incorporate these concepts into decisions that directly benefit their community. We are excited to share some of the work they produced.

The Olson Memorial Highway project will determine the future of the highway for the next half-century. We are calling on project decision-makers to prioritize the ideas and perspectives of Northside youth, who will live with the consequences of this decision.
