We have been hosting Open Streets Minneapolis since 2011. This year, the City of Minneapolis Public Works Department ended our contract without advance discussion. While this decision jeopardizes the future of Open Streets, the Minneapolis City Council can take steps to ensure the event series returns in 2024.
Open Streets Minneapolis is a cherished community tradition where neighbors meet neighbors, learn about their community, and experience a car-free environment. It is a hallmark of warmer weather that doesn’t require you to spend a penny to enjoy. We lose this and so much more if we are unable to continue Open Streets Minneapolis.
If there is enough public pressure, the Minneapolis City Council can include funding for Open Streets Minneapolis in their budget amendment in November. From there, the Department of Public Service will allocate the funding to whichever department they see best fit to coordinate the program. Add your name to the petition and contact your Councilmember.
